The Legislative Political Action Team is a group that works on legislation that supports the best interests of our members, our patients, and the community. Currently, the LPAT has been working on getting the Safe Staffing bill passed in Albany. Our tasks can range from getting petitions signed during our breaks or change of shift, traveling with other members of the local to Albany to meet with legislators face to face, to planning events to education others about the need for Safe Staffing legislation.
In the past year we have had a breakfast to share and record our staffing stories with each other and elected officials. We collected signatures on staffing petitions. We collected holiday cards to Jody Lomeo asking for better staffing. We travelled to Albany to speak with our state legislators. We pushed 7 local municipalities to pass resolutions supporting Safe Staffing that resulted in media attention and additional pressure on state legislators.
You can be involved in our LPAT to any degree which you are comfortable. You don’t have to speak in front of people, but often, those who have never told their stories in public, have the most compelling experiences to share.
If you would like to join the LPAT, or just find out a little bit more, contact Sarah Buckley (sbuckley@cwa1168.org). We welcome all members from every job title.
